Thank you for your interest in Volunteer Emergency Families for Children. VEFC has
provided safe shelter to over 16,500 at-risk children in Virginia over the past
29 years. VEFC has made its service free-of-cost for organizations such as yours.

Services VEFC Provides:
- Shelter for emergency removals
- Respite for kids needing a “cooling off” period from their birth or adoptive family
- Respite for children currently in foster care
- Respite for youth who have earned time away from a residential facility
Facts about VEFC:
- VEFC is a private non-profit organization dedicated to the philosophy that a child’s needs are best met in a caring family environment.
- VEFC does not charge a fee for use of the homes that we recruit and train.
- Each partner agency helps approve the VEFC host homes in their community using their own approval standards.
- Each DSS, CSU or licensed child placing agency participates in their locality’s VEFC training to ensure families will be able to meet the agency’s needs.
- As a VEFC Partner Agency you will have access to our entire statewide network of host homes.
- VEFC host homes receive no financial compensation for their service.
- VEFC serves children from the ages of birth to age 18.
- All VEFC volunteers are able to choose the age, gender, and length of stay for each placement that is appropriate for them.
- VEFC accepts placements for 1 to 21 day periods.
- VEFC families do not shelter children who are violent to strangers, suicidal, or currently on drugs or alcohol.
