Volunteer Emergency Families for Children (VEFC) was initiated in
1979 by the Virginia Department of Corrections, the Virginia Department of
Social Services, and the Virginia Council of Churches. Incorporated on May 29,
1980 as a private, non-profit, charitable organization, VEFC has since grown
into a state-wide network bridging the gap between schools, businesses,
churches, and youth-serving organizations. Since the inception of VEFC in
Virginia, over 15,900 infants, children, and teens have been served through
VEFC’s Shelter Care and Mentoring programs. Children and youth in crisis have
experienced the nurture, care, and compassion of a VEFC family or mentor. VEFC
has grown to be the largest crisis intervention, shelter care and mentoring
program for abused, neglected, homeless and victimized children in the nation.
VEFC connects
communities with highly trained and committed volunteers. These volunteers
effectively meet the ever-growing needs of children and youth through
broad-scale input from VEFC volunteers, local leaders, agency professionals,
and staff throughout Virginia.
